English Late-Medieval timber-framed architecture

Photographic archive of Late-Medieval timber joints from Hampshire

Here is a photographic archive of the buildings surveyed in Hampshire for this project (Feb 2006 to July 2009). The collection acts as an appendix to the main thesis - "Building in Fear? A re-evaluation of Late-Medieval joint chrono-typologies (c1250-1530) in the light of recent dendrochronological investigations in Hampshire". The archive stands at just over 100 buildings dendro dated between AD1244 and 1530 with 4 dated by documents (denoted by*). The majority of the dates are available on the Oxford Dendrochronology Laboratory website and the Vernacular Architecture Group's website.

It is important to stress that the date, though precise, is the date the tree was felled not the date the building was constructed, therefore it is only correct to suggest

“the Manor Farm at Hambledon was constructed of trees felled in 1244"

not

“the Manor Farm at Hambledon was built in 1244".

Evidence suggests that the buildings were often constructed within a year or two of felling (Roberts 2003, ix), and therefore a close estimation for the date of construction maybe made based of the dendro date.

All dates shown below, unless marked with an * are felling dates not construction dates, and are taken from the lower estimate (see dendro reports for more information). Those marked with an * are derived from documentation and no dendro samples were taken. There are 4 such buildings.
